The Malamba-Mazuene Seascape

The health and sustainable future of Malamba and Mazuene's communities and the Inhambane Seascape are intertwined.

Malamba Coastal Collaborative's center of engagement is focused on 12,000ha of currently sparsely populated and remote coastal areas in the Inhambane Seascape of Massinga, Mozambique. The area is home to the communities of Malamba (378 families) and Mazuene (225 families) and the schools of Malamba (350 students) and Mazuene (150 students).

The seascape was declared a Mission Blue Hopespot by the esteemed Dr Sylvia Earle and falls within the center of endemism in Inhambane. Malamba-Mazuene also forms a critical corridor connecting two established protected areas - the Pomene National Reserve to the south, and the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park and Vilankulo Sanctuary to our north.

The government of Mozambique is currently evaluating the feasibility of declaring this part of the coastline a "partially protected area" in recognition of its importance to both people and ecosystems. Protection of the environment here is critical not only for the protection of a wealth of biodiversity on land and at sea but also essential for communities who rely almost completely on coastal and marine natural resources for their wellbeing and survival.
On land, the most prominent feature is the widespread presence of coastal forests and a very high density of endangered cycads and other endemics. Their preservation is crucial. The band of intact coastal sand forest spanning almost this entire coastal area hosts not only a diversity of endemic flora, but also reptiles and birds, suni, duiker, bushpig, river otter and elephant shrew, among others.

Where We Are Based: Mukovela Field Station and HQ

MCC'S head-quarters, field station and base of operations is a 100ha dune and forest sanctuary perched on the tropical Indian Ocean in a recently declared "Mission Blue Hope Spot" and a "Center of Endemism.”

Community members, researchers, conservationists, collaborators, health professionals, artists and musicians, birders and naturalists are welcome here! This is where we host the CCP and Apiculture trainings and where we and university students and professors collaborating with the community and teaching along this seascape.

Facilities include overnight accommodation with hot water, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, 24-hr solar-powered facilities, Satellite WIFI, and a tranquil group work space in alignment with the ecological sensitivity of surrounding forest. Investment in our field station continues to grow with new accommodation for local, students and visiting collaborators scheduled for 2024.

All of our programming is based from MCC's HQ.
