Ocean Protectors

MCC worked alongside community leaders and artisanal fishers in establishing a formal governance structure to manage coastal and marine resources. The Malamba-Mazuene Community Fisheries Council (CCP) was formally established in 2022 with jurisdiction over a critical reach of the Inhambane Seascape directly adjacent to the famous Baixo Zambia and Baixo Africa reef systems.

The CCP elected new leadership constituting 24 community members, including 6 women leaders, and a growing body of 48 inaugural members - 30% being women.

In 2024, MCC secured funding and constructed a new CCP headquarters on the shared boundary of Malamba and Mazuene.

In 2023, MCC secured strategic partnerships for the long-term development and support of the CCP, including exceptional technical partners such as Blue Ventures and Fauna and Flora.

Community Health

In 2023, MCC installed 4 new, freshwater boreholes and upgraded a 5th that now serves 275 families/~2,200 people. Both primary schools ~serving 500 students ~ now have access to potable water on-site at each school.

MCC also funded the establishment and training of 3 new water committees and 40 water committee members, including 15 women. Annual trainings now span building community-based capacity for maintenance and repair of each of the borehole systems, and health and sanitation.

Mapping of Community Resources

In partnership with the CCP,
UP and the Swedish Agricultural University, undertook
the first participatory mapping process with Malamba and Mazuene and the local District to document
and map important cultural resources, marine resources,
reefs and conditions.

Ocean Protectors

Partnered with CRIOBE and a team of international marine experts to design a cutting-edge marine health assessment and baseline study of Baixo Zambia and Africa Reefs.

Next Generations: Environment & Wellbeing

MCC launched the Bimbi Wutomi Eco Clubs serving 500 primary schools students from Malamba and Mazuene. Eco-camps are hosted at the Mukovela Field Station.

The Honeybee Alliance & Family Forests

MCC established the 1st Community Apiculture Program and trained 11 beekeepers including 2 of the 1st local, women beekeepers. We also trained and employed the 1st Apiculture Supervisor (a woman).

MCC purchased and installed 42 sustainably crafted beehives across 10 apiary sites shared between Malamba and Mazuene.

We also launched a Family Forests/Regenerative Agriculture Program to explore and pilot methods for reducing the need for slash and burn of Miombo forests while improving agricultural productivity. In 2023, we trained the first team of practitioners, including 5 women and 4 men, and established 3 community food gardens and food-tree groves at each of the two primary schools.

Established a partnership with Universidade Eduardo
Mondlane and the lab of Dr. Alice Massingue to perform the
1st botanical and traditional knowledge survey. Dr Massingue
and her team inventoried the sanctuary area and interviewed
elders, traditional healers and beekeepers from Malamba and
Mazuene. 169 plant species were identified, 14 of those
endemic.

Mukovela Field Station

Established a 100-ha coastal Miombo sanctuary and community-run field station perched along the tropical Indian Ocean. Collaborators, health and development professionals, artists and musicians, biologists and birders and naturalists are all welcome! We offer space for Research, Training & Education, and an Environmental and Cultural Retreat Space.

Facilities include: Kitchen and living spaces; fridge/freezer and full kitchen; hot water; 24-hr solar-powered facilities; satellite WIFI; and most importantly a meaningful gathering space filled with beauty and tranquility.

Alongside a coalition of partners we are pioneering community-led coastal conservation through collaborative and synergistic programming, including:
